I.Jon Russell, M.D., Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he is also Director of the University Clinical Research Center. He is Editor of the Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain, Board Chair of the International Myopain Society, and a widely acknowledged authority on fibromyalgia (FM). Although his research in the field of fibromyalgia has spanned many topics, he is best known for his pioneering work studying the neurochemical pain mediators now commonly associated with the pathogenesis of FM (i.e. serotonin, substance P, nerve growth factor, and dynorphin A). Today, Dr. Russell continues his study of pain-amplifying neurochemical mechanisms in fibromyalgia and is also currently engaged in state-of-the-art work utilizing functional MRI’s.
