D-Ribose & Creatine Monohydrate
This is taken from an information sheet
 by Pharmaceutical Compounding NZ Ltd.

D-Ribose is a pentose (5-carbon) monosaccharide simple sugar that is produced by the body from glucose.  It is present in every living cell in the human body as part of the cell's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid). DNA holds all the genetic information of a cell and RNA holds information for protein manufacture by the cell.

Ribose is also an important component of AMP, ADP, and ATP, the building blocks of cellular energy and therefore plays a major role in the way in which cells produce and utilise energy.  Ribose is present in the body in small amounts and the average physically-active person has approximately 1.6 mg of ribose per 100 ml of blood.

Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid manufactured in the liver, kidneys and pancreas. Over 95% of the body's Creatine stores are found in muscle cells. Creatine may also be obtained from the diet and is present in salmon, beef and chicken.  Creatine's function in the body appears to be associated with the support of muscle fibres and muscle cell function.

D-Ribose/Creatine Monohydrate Supplementation

Although D-Ribose may be produced from glucose, the conversion is quite slow and therefore a supplemental form of D-Ribose is more efficient.  Due to it's essential role in the production of cellular energy, supplemental D-Ribose has been shown to improve the body's production of energy as a whole.

Supplemental D-Ribose has also been shown to:
  • Improve some aspects of athletic performance
  • Increase the body's production of cellular energy
  • Restore and increase energy production in cardiac muscle
  • Increase overall stamina
  • Improve normal functioning of the cells of the musculoskeletal system
In cases where a deficiency or reduction in the production of cellular energy is a problem, supplementation with D-Ribose has shown to be of extreme benefit, especially where changes in muscle cell forms and oxygen utilisation are a concern.

Simple monosaccharide sugars such as D-Ribose have been shown to improve the uptake and restore cellular levels of creatine in muscle cells in conditions associated with low creatine levels.

Some of these conditions include chronic heart and muscle cell disorders. Creatine Monohydrate is a supplemental form of Creatine that may rapidly restore cellular levels of Creatine.

Creative Monohydrate has been shown to:
  • Delay the onset of muscle fatigue and reduce lactic acid production during exercise
  • Increase the body's basal metabolic rate (BMR)
  • Improve muscle strength and stamina in fatigue syndromes
  • Improve memory and mental function

How much D-Ribose do I need?

To restore and support cellular energy production, a minimum dose of 5 grams or D-Ribose and 2.5 grams of creatine monohydrte is recommended daily. Ask you healthcare practitioner or pharmacist what the appropriate dose for you to take would be. Up to 95% of creatine taken orally is absorbed into the bloodstream

What Supplement forms of D-Ribose
and Creatine are available?

The most effective way to take D-Ribose and Creatine is in powder form.  Powders are absorbed into the bloodstream much more rapidly than any other form and as a result, the active D-Ribose/Creatine mix can be transported to the muscle cells much more efficiently.

How Safe are D-Ribose & Creatine Supplements?

Being naturally occurring compounds, you can not overdose on D-Ribose and Creatine if used in amounts of less than 15 grams per day.  The body will excrete what it does not use.  However, use and do not exceed the recommended daily dose as prescribed by your healthcare professional.

Side Effects and Drug Interactions

No known side effects have been reported with using D-Ribose in amounts of less than 10 grams per day. Larger amounts may cause some gastrointestinal upset and may lower glucose levels.  However, it is not known whether symptoms of hypoglycaemia might result.

There are no known drug interactions with D-Ribose. caffeine may reduce the uptake and effectiveness of supplemental Creatine.
