Three Amazing Orcas Play at Sunset Beach

Submitted by Gaille Brennan

On Friday, April 26, 2002, what appeared to be a family of three beautiful, healthy Orcas played around at the rocks at half-tide. It was unusual at 10:00 a.m. that so few people were near the beach and no surfies were anywhere to be seen.

From my living room, I was totally amazed to see their huge fins circling in front of the wooden observatory. It was a privilege to witness the huge rise and fall of the white tail fins and graceful splash as they circled, then changed directions as if putting on a show.

However, by the time I found my camera, the best photo shots had passed. From this clear view, I like to think that the largest was the male, the next in size the mother, and then the smallest one would be the baby. Someone said that if more than one whale blew air at the same time, they were a family. They seemed to be having a great feed before gliding down to the river.

To the cheers and delight of several enthusiastic witnesses, it seemed that the larger Orca enjoyed riding the small waves and surfing just for fun. The graceful mammals blessed The Port for more than 20 minutes before continuing on their coastal journey. Several local fishermen report the whales were still present by the sandbar the following day.

Although an unusual event, this is the reason we are all blessed to live at beautiful Port Waikato in New Zealand.
