Hi Everyone.
In answer to questions from Marylou (fictitious name), here is some great information from my friend Char in California as well as me, regarding salicylates in products.

Remember, from the day you start Guai, if you are salicylate free you are OK. If you do happen to block and get plant extracts on your skin, you will only block for 24 hours.

Bye for now,
Megan

Nothing has helped me. I have read about guaifenesin and fibromyalgia and am willing to try guaifenesin. Do I have to follow a salicylic free diet in order for the guai to work? It is all rather scary and overwhelming!! What else can you tell me?? - Marylou

    Answer
You do not have to follow a Salicylate free diet for Guai to work. You only have to avoid getting Salicylates (plant extracts) on your skin. You must be careful with skin products, shampoos, makeup, toothpaste etc. You can't take natural supplements that are very concentrated, but you can eat most foods as they go through your digestive system. You can't chew mint or suck lemons as they could get into your blood stream.

Have you read Dr. St. Amand's Book "What Your Dr. May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia"? It is excellent and everyone should read it before starting Guai. He has a chapter on Salicylates and how they interfere with Guai. You must understand this.

Also he has devised a special diet for people who have the complication of Fibromyalgia and Hypoglycemia. His diet controls Hypoglycemia and gets rid of these symptoms. To order his book and read all the papers he has written about Guaifenesin, go to his website at
Fibromyalgia Treatment Center You can help this condition by taking Guai, but you must follow the protocol properly for it to work. - Megan

  • Query
What am I looking for in products that are no-nos? Is it plants, fruits, and salicylic acids?? and what else? I have printed the lists from the website... How confusing! I don't know from these products what is good for me and what is not in terms of my skin tolerance. - Marylou

    Answer
You have to avoid plant and fruit extracts in body products also salicylic acid and aspirin/disprin, which is pure salicylic acid. - Megan

  • Query
What is the Salicylate Screening Test? - Marylou

    Answer
Here is a simple screening test for salicylates. It may screen out some ingredients that are innocent, but definitely will not let any salicylates in. - Char

  • Ask these Test Questions
    • Do the ingredients have any plant names or the word "extract" in them?
      (The answer should be "no")
    • Do any of the ingredients have the syllable "sal" in them?
      (The answer should be "no")
    • Are the ingredient names long and hard to pronounce words that you would not use in normal conversation? Do some of them even have numbers in them?
      (The answer should be "yes")
(With thanks to Anne Louise, Admin team member.)

All of the following may contain salicylates so check them carefully
    • Make sure products don't contain plants, herbs, extracts.
    • No words or syllables with "sal" in them.
    • Check for aloe, menthol, extracts, castor oil.
    • Herbal medications such as ginseng, St. John's Wort, gingko biloba, saw palmetto, blue-green algae, Echinacea, or Noni juice.
    •
    • Acne products, dandruff shampoos, bubble baths, cosmetics, gums, shampoos, conditioners, sprays, lipsticks, lotions, lozenges, muscle pain creams, razors with aloe strips, skin cleansers or exfoliants.
    • Toothpaste and dental floss - make sure it doesn't have mint.
    • In deodorant - check for castor oil.
    • In lotions - look for aloe, other herbals.
    • In hair products - look for chamomile, lavender, herbals, aloe.
    • In make-up - look for castor oil, other plants.
    • Facial tissues - watch for Eucalyptus Oil and Aloe Vera.
    • Shaving cream - check for plant derivatives such as aloe, mint or mentholatum
and razor's with the Aloe Vera strips - sometimes blue.
    • Sunscreen - check for oxyl-salicylate, homosalate, aloe.
    • No lipsticks with aloe, camphor or castor oils.
    • In Toners, no witch hazel.
    • Toilet paper and kleenex - watch out for aloe impregnated in them.
    • No Bubble baths and lotions with essential oils or plant parts such as Aloe, cucumber, lavender; almond or grape seed oils etc.
    •
    • No Lozenges with menthol, mint, peppermint or spearmint
    • No Pain products labeled salicylate or salicylic acid such as Aspirin, Salsalate, Disalcid, Anacin, Xcedrin.
    • No Medications such as Alka Seltzer or Urised.
    • No Wart or callus removers (sal-acid plasters)
    • No medicated creams, like Ben-Gay, Noxzema, blistex, balms and lotions such as Myoflex, Zostrix (Capsaicin or capsicum)
    • Vitamins such as C or E that are derived from Rose Hips or contain bioflavonoids, added herbs such as alfalfa, parsley.
    •
    • No mint candies or chewing gum.
    • Be suspicious of anything that says "natural" and read carefully for any mention of flowers, plants, etc.
    • If it feels cool or if it burns, it probably contains menthol.
    • If it is a chemical it is okay unless it has "sal" in it.
    • Use waterproof gloves when gardening or peeling vegetables and fruit.
    • Use gloves for chores utilizing Pinesol, Lemon Oil, Etc.
    • Use gloves when cleaning and peeling vegetables and fruit.

  • Query
Do I have to be careful when handling fruit & when eating it, i.e. apples. Should I just use a knife and fork. What do you do when choosing your fruit and veges in a store?? Do you wear gloves or ask for help? - Marylou

    Answer
Yes, be careful when handling fruit and veges. Especially things like lemons/oranges/garlic and mint etc. Buy some of those food-handling gloves and then you will be safe. The sals can get in through cuts in your hands. Always garden with gloves on too. Fruit with its skin on is usually OK to touch in shops. - Megan

  • Query
I eat several pieces of fruit a day, as well as raw carrots. - Marylou

    Answer
Eating fruit protocol. Avoid walking on grass. Use food-handling gloves when touching fruit and vegetables, just to be on the safe side. It depends on how sensitive you are to Sals, as to how much you will block. When peeling and eating fruits, wash your hands straight away and lick your lips often to get rid of the residue. A lot of fruit is quite low in sals. Lemons and mint are the most powerful. - Megan

  • Query
I want to make sure that my fruit eating isn't causing me to block. - Marylou

    Answer
Do the blocking test if you are really worried. I will send a copy of this e-mail to my friend Nurse Claudia in the States FMSNURSE@aol.com and she hopefully can tell you how to do the test. I know it involves altering your dose for a while, to see what happens with your cycling. She may also be able to give you more advice on the fruit issue. - Megan

  • Query
I eat several pieces of fruit a day, as well as raw carrots. When I know I'm not blocking I will increase my dose if still no improvement on my thigh. It is so frustrating trying to get everything right and judge when I'm cycling. I will be going for a mapping in the next couple of weeks but I don't expect to see much improvement despite some early signs I had initially of very painful areas changing. Initially after going to 1200mg I was in bed for several days with severe pain in my arms and cheeks so I've kept at that dose, but have had few very bad patches since, and only a couple of good days. - Marylou

    Answer
Don't try to go past your cycling dose, as this can make your symptoms unbearable. I've been there and it was terrible. Only now can I tolerate a higher dose of Guai, as I am into my 5th year on the Protocol. - Megan

  • Query
I have switched over my products and have started the diet. I am slightly hypoglycaemic. Do I have to stick to the diet 100% in order for it to work? To totally give up sugar and caffeine (coffee) seems so hard. Wine is one of my pleasures in life!! What advice can you give me. - Marylou

    Answer
You only need to do the diet if you are truly hyperglycaemic (HG). The HG symptoms are listed in Dr. St. Amand's book. If you need the diet it will make your HG symptoms go away and if you cheat they will come back and you will feel bad. It's as simple as that.

You can have artificial sweeteners and decaf coffee. Wine is a no-no at the beginning I think. If I can remember rightly you can have some alcohol later on. I did the diet for nearly a year, but it made no difference to how I felt, which told me I wasn't HG. Only 40% of Fibromyalgics are.

  • Query
What hand and body lotion do I use? - Marylou

    Answer
The only lotion I use is Alpha Keri Lotion. It is made from Lanolin from sheep's wool. I use it on my face, hands and body. It is marvellous. I also use the Alpha Keri Oil for massage. - Megan

  • Queries
When a product i.e. body cream, reads 'fragrances', is this to be trusted?- Marylou
Char, what are your thoughts on Fragrances, please? I have assumed that they are ok, as they would be in very small quantities. Please advise! It will be a great help to our Guai people.
    - Megan

    Answer from Char
Fragrances are usually ok. The more expensive perfumes (very expensive) use oils and they will most likely block. Fragrances in our products are usually alright. It never hurts to call the companies and ask. But.... if you use perfume, etc. I would advise spraying it on your clothes or a hankie not on your skin. - Megan

  • Query
What about wearing perfume? - Marylou

    Answer from Megan
I am sure real perfume is fine to wear. I will check this out. I don't wear it any more, as I had terrible chemical sensitivities. - Megan

    Answer from Char
Claudia states that perfumes are ok. Many members apply the perfume to their hair or clothes. I personally cannot wear perfume due to my chemical sensitivity.

Beware though ~ many body sprays may contain fruit extracts, which are not ok. If one has any doubt after using perfume, etc. for awhile, then one should do the blocking test. - Char

  • Query
What lipsticks can I use? - Marylou

    Answer from Megan
I have used Max Factor Gold Silks, but they have just been taken off the market. Char, can you help here? What lipstick do you recommend? I have to find something new to use too. - Megan

    Answer from Char
I personally use Andrea Rose lipstick and lip-gloss and love them. The lip-gloss has Vitamin E in it. I use and love Curel Fragrance Free Daily Moisture Therapy Lotion. Many folks like and use Jergens Ultra Healing Lotion. It seems to clear up rashes.

I've been on Guai for nine months and still have not noticed any big changes (my left thigh is only just starting to break up), but I know that it is doing something because when I took a two-week break from it I felt awful, everything ached. - Marylou

    Answer
Don't worry about the left thigh thing. As long as there are areas of improvement on your map, that is all that matters. I reversed quite differently to the norm, and had a hell of a time, as I was clearing muscles and tendons at the same time - Very painful! We are supposed to clear muscles first then tendons. Not me, I was a fast responder. If you know you are cycling, then the Guai must be working and you can't be blocking. For some people foamy urine is a good sign you are cycling. (I always felt bad when I had foamy urine. When it was clear I felt good). This is not the case for everyone. When you took the break and felt awful, it proved that the Guai was making a difference, so that is something. - Megan
