Until we have a permanent Salicylate webmaster, I have made this list from the helpful advice that the Fibromyalgia Mentors and others have sent to me for your use. I have listed most of the products except the supplements, that people have sent me, including those which still have an incomplete list of ingredients.

I would be grateful if you could please add to our list with any new products especially when you are certain of them being sal-free. Could you also help to complete the missing ingredients of products listed. You may send the wrappers to me or simply carefully type these out and supply the date when bought to jacqui@voxau.com If not certain whether or not products are sal-free, please note this, so I can research them.

Most products have ingredient lists on the back or on the wrapper. Presumably products in NZ and Australia are made from the same recipe. As long as you have the ingredients for the product, and are keeping note of these, you can work from there.

At Dr. St. Amand's website there are lists of safe ingredients. His quick references are at www.fibromyalgiatreatment.com or you can quickly go to his safe ingredients by clicking the accompanying logos on this page.

Also we have information on our Positive Living website that may be of benefit to you in our Guaifenesin section

And now for some questions about Sals from a new Guaier

  • Hello There!
I've worked out the obvious products to not use - Shampoo/Conditioner, Shaving Cream, Toothpaste, Hair Gel, Deodorant, Blonding Cream. I don't take any herbal medicines anymore, so that's not a problem. I've got Emu Oil coming to me and I have to restock on Magnesium as soon as I check this particular brand is Sal-free.
Now I've got a few questions about the not-so-obvious ones.

    Question 1
Why is it okay to eat foods with natural salicylates in them, but not take supplements with them in?
Answer  There are varying degrees of sensitivity  - some people are highly sensitive and the sal-free products matter. However, if you are serious about the effectiveness of Guai - adherence to the protocol may make the difference between success or not.
Remembering that the more important feature of the salicylate regime is that salicylates affect Guai efficacy from TOPICAL salicylate absorption through the skin rather than internal digestion,
    • it is because the strength of salicylates in natural food being eaten is minimal, whereas in supplements it may be strong enough to have a negative effect, besides there are other questionable effects and variable strengths of some herbal supplements
I researched this in the Protocol book - the 'Bible' or standard reference book for Guai users - and the answers are clear..... See pp 78-79 and pp 252-254 of "What Your Doctor May Not tell You About Fibromyalgia."

    Question 2
Supplements Are there any multi-vitamins etc on the market that don't contain natural salicylates in them?
Answer Bearing in mind what is said in the above book - Positive Living is recommending Alpha Lipid Colostrum, which is the top grade New Zealand Colostrum, especially formulated to enhance absorbability and ensure up to 100% better bioavaiability to the body's systems.

Only colostrum is designed by nature to protect mammals (like us) from disease! Alpha Lipid Colostrum is the only supplement that contains natural abitbodies for the sort of illnesses we are exposed to every day. There are many other 'immune-boosting' supplements available, but these do not contain antibodies. Colsotrum's natural antibodies have been scientifically and clinically shown to be effective against germs and Alpha Lipid colostrum has no negative side-effects, only the positive benefit of protecting and boosting your immune system.

Alpha Lipid also has a number of extra benefits: the destruction of bacteria in the gut, a protective effect on the liver, an improvement in mental abilities and a lessening of the symptoms of depression. This is why Positive Living is stocking it.

Many fibromyalgics are having excellent success with Alpha Lipid Colostrum for energy and vitality.  It also helps strengthen your immune system, which fibromyalgics need. Alpha Lipid Colostrum also helps you care for the anti-aging problem or degeneration of the organs in your body because you are not going into the fourth stage REM sleep.

This lack of deep, restful, 'renewal' sleep is of concern to us because we therfore lack the normal renewing of the body's organs
which does not take place, making us more prone to illness. Alpha Lipid Colostrum may be worth you trying it and, because it is an animal product, Alpha Lipid Colostrum can be used along with Guai.

Check the 'Therapies' page at Therapies - colostrum  The file is being worked on at present and additional material is being added regularly.  Positive Living is happy to send you material by post if you email Jacqui

    Question 3
Washing powder- Fabric softener We have lavender fabric softener. So my question is - will the fact that it is being used on my clothes be a problem? If not, when I do the washing I'll just have to make sure I don't touch it.
Answer 1. This depends on how allergic your skin is to substances.  It would be better to avoid the addition of the lavender until you have established a clear regime - Jacqui
Answer 2. It will depend on how sal sensitive you are to plant extracts, for the Fabric Softener to be a problem.  Some people block a lot easier than others and it may get onto your skin through your clothes.  I would however, try to find a softener without any plant origins, just to be on the safe side.  If you block, the Guai will have to do the job twice and you don't want to go through that - Megan.

    Question 4
Same thing for dishwashing liquid... will it matter if it's on the plates, as long as I don't touch it when I do the washing? Plates should have no residue if thoroughly rinsed.
Answer 1. You can probably escape if you wear gloves while doing the washing up - but why make life a hassle for yourself? Just find a sal-free dishwashing liquid - Jacqui.
Answer 2.   Most dishwashing liquids are Ok.  Just avoid lemon etc. and don't buy the health shop ones as they will most likely have plant extracts in them.  It shouldn't matter about the plates and to be really safe just wear gloves when doing the dishes - Megan.

    Question 5
Ajax, Pinoclean, Toilet duck etc... If I touch the benches etc after being cleaned with these will that be a problem? When I do the washing, I'll wear gloves of course...
Answer 1. These products should not remain on the surfaces if they have been thoroughly cleaned and rinsed - therefore it should be OK. Up to you, why create a hassle for yourself? Find sal-free substances over a long-term period. Make life easier !
Remember that finger tips may absorb enough salicylates within 15 seconds to cause a problem for Guaifenesin. - Jacqui.
Answer 2.  After cleaning benches etc. just wipe them over with a damp cloth to get rid of the residue, and to be safe again, gloves are the best option when cleaning.  Also when peeling veges, fruit etc. these have lots of juice - Megan
